Coastal K-9 Bakery opened its doors November 2004 by me, Jackie Oakes. I was at a stage in my life where I wanted to do something creative and fun. What made me want to open a dog bakery? Our dog, Tippy, an English Springer Spaniel, we discovered suffers from food allergies. We found a suitable dry food but were not successful in locating an allergy-free snack. Having a love for cooking and baking, I decided I could make his treats. Using my family recipes, I developed the recipes for his treats. Then came Woodie. We adopted Woodstock (Woodie) from a local animal hospital in March 2004. He has become a loving family member and “little brother” to Tippy. In April 2004, I attended a valuable training at Barbara’s Canine Catering, in Charlotte, to begin my bakery. Barbara was an exceptional trainer, inspiration, and resource to me. And, with her help, my dream has been fulfilled.

It is my desire to offer to our pet friends the best quality products possible. Each treat is made with love and we know you will feel good about giving our treats to your pet. Only the best human-quality ingredients are used with NO sodium, sugars, artificial colors, preservatives or animal fats. These recipes have been approved by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, local veterinarians, and of course Tippy and Woodie.

Don’t forget to enroll in the Frequent Diner’s Club.  And, come by every Saturday afternoon from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM, for “Yappy Hour” where we serve free cake and doggie daiquiris for your four-legged best friend. Bring your pet’s adoption papers to the shop and receive a free gift.

We offer “staying in the kennel” cakes, cakes for graduation, births, marriages, new homes, adoption, and “bark mitzvahs”. We also offer treats for our feline friends.

Growing up in the Navy afforded my family a chance to live at Carolina Beach, NC which eventually became my family's home. I returned in 1989 to North Carolina after 23 years in Arkansas. I have always enjoyed cooking and did some catering while living in Arkansas. After adopting our English Springer Spaniel, Tippy Tyler II, we discovered Tippy had severe ear infections brought on partly by food allergies. By eliminating various foods, mainly wheat, we found Tippy's ears were clearing and staying healthy.  It was not long afterwards that I thought I could do this on a larger scale and open a shop. After a training session with Barbara's Canine catering, I was on my way. It has been very rewarding to be able to offer healthy, wholesome, nutritious treats to dogs and cats. And they like it!! And the shop began...

We are saddened by the loss of our beloved Tippy on Decembr 8, 2008.  Tippy was the inspiration for my business, the namesake of our treats, and the "bestest" buddy to his little brother, Woodie (who has the honor of carrying the name of our pastries, Woodie's Goodies).   TIppy was a galant "old man" that crossed the Rainbow Bridge to a place where he can run with the best of them.   There will never be another "Tip". We'll miss you.

Back

I began my life as a sickly pup and was under the care of the veterinarian at Carolina Beach. The Pet Hospital put my picture in the local newspaper hoping to find a family to adopt me. My family saw the picture and came immediately to the hospital to see me. I took time out from keeping all the other dogs at the vet in their place, to meet my new family. My family took me home to meet my big brother, Tippy. From the beginning we sniffed, barked and chased each other, and eventually became best buddies.  Tippy passed away recently, and I miss him.  He showed me the ways of a dog's life and I am curious enough to look for more. I like everyone immediately and am ready to play!  My birthday is December 5th.
